Schmoozer or Closer?

This a good article from one of my favorite sites, Inc.com.

Similarly, I've often thought that in business there are "presenters" and "deal makers".
A presenter is someone who knows how to develop a relationship with a client and can lay out all the details for a prospect in a clear fashion, whereas the deal maker specializes in the business logic of the relationship.

Presenters are typically good at bringing in accounts and making them confortable but not as good at tying up the loose ends, while deal makers are great with the business loose ends but can destroy relationships when they become too "sharky"--the same can be said of the presenter if a deal doesn't progress towards a close quickly enough and they remain too "talky".

I believe that both are fundamental and are most effective when they understand how to work together.

I think that the schmoozer/closer paradigm comes into play a lot in life. (I also think that both traits are very learnable.)

In politics, you have personalties that are great orators, but bad implementors--and on the other hand very pragmatic implementors who just aren't presentable or inspiring enough to get elected. You have guys who are great at getting that first date, but bad at getting that first kiss--and guys who can get that kiss but never get the relationship.

I think the examples are limitless and that the schmoozer/closer is a pretty good model to use in understanding the way people approach business or life.
